A Journey through Melbourne’s Modernism

Melbourne’s Modernism has some new advocates following two Heritage Festival walking tours led by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria)’s Built Environment Committee with Melbourne Architours. The tours focused on the modernist movement’s impact on post-war Melbourne and the resultant heritage implications seen today.

The tours were great timing for the National Trust with Melbourne’s post war architecture under threat. Melbourne has already lost some of its most architecturally and socially significant examples of Modernist buildings. This “Challenging Heritage” is currently misunderstood and overlooked. Following the outcomes of City of Melbourne Amendment C186, the National Trust has undertaken a review of post war buildings in the CBD and are moving towards a group classification in 2014.

The tour brochure and route will be available for download soon…
