Mooramong Fire Recovery
On January 9th, 2026, a fast moving grassfire started near Streatham, and soon impacted nearby residents, farms and the town of Skipton. Mooramong, the historic homestead and farm held by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) was affected by the fire, which burned through 80% of the property resulting in the loss of many stock and extensive damage to fencing.
We sincerely applaud the efforts of the CFA and farm staff who fought hard to keep the historic homestead safe, and for all the assistance of Blaze Aid and other volunteers in the aftermath of the fire.
While recovery efforts are ongoing, we had some positive news on our latest visit to the MacKinnon Nature Reserve. Critically Endangered Anchor plants (Discaria pubescens) that were growing on the rock rises had been completely consumed by fire, raising serious concerns for their survival. However, following recent rain, they have shown strong reshooting from the base, enabling seed collection by the Wadawurrung Caring for Country team.

Also seen on site were many Yellow-Wash bluebells (Wahlenbergia luteola) and Blushing Bindweed (Convolvulus angustissimus) in flower.

We are focusing on these positive signs and working with our partners—the Reserve Working Group, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, Trust for Nature, Glenelg Hopkins CMA, Friends of the Forgotten Woodlands, and the local community—to ensure MacKinnon Nature Reserve recovers stronger and better managed than ever.
